About

One film, taken apart

An independent publication about David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive.

Mulholland Drive was shot as a television pilot for ABC in 1999, turned down, and finished as a feature with money from StudioCanal. It runs 147 minutes. Lynch took Best Director at Cannes in 2001, jointly with Joel Coen, and in 2022 the Sight and Sound critics’ poll placed the film first among everything made since 2000.

This site is organised in five sections: the two halves and the break between them, the pilot and the money that rescued it, the ten clues Lynch printed with the DVD, the people doubled across the join, and the box, the key and the coffee cup. Seventeen pieces in all; the archive lists every one.

Readings are attributed to the critic and the publication that made them. Where the film is ambiguous, the ambiguity is the subject.
